Major Keys to success as told by my boss
So everyone who knows me knows I work at the visitor center at Sam Houston State University as a student ambassador and I have always looked up to successful people to learn and grow and be successful as well, so I decided to interview my boss, Mr. Lockwood, (Director of the Visitor Center) and here is how he inspired me.
To have drive and being dedicated to your job and above anything, to love what you do. “money will always come, so find something you love” – Lockwood
Tenacity- keep pushing when times get tough
Luck- surprisingly this makes sense, right place at the right time, Mr. Lockwood mentioned that he read a biography from Steve jobs the creator of apple and in the biography he said if the market wasn’t doing so well his invention of the computer wouldn’t have done so well, there for its all luck.
Networking – this is key, and Mr. Lockwood’s number 1
Always be prepared- example, I want to be a teacher and Mr. Lockwood explained to me if you were in an elevator with the super intendent of a school district you wanted to work for, do you have a 5 min speech on how to sell yourself to get your dream job. Could you sell yourself?
“There is no silver bullet” self-explanatory
After telling me the keys to success which I think anyone can use, he told me his story of success. Mr. Lockwood bluntly said his journey to getting his job was “fast moving up” he spent one year of experience in admissions, then jumped up to assistant director of orientation and in one year moved up to director of orientation because his boss retired (perfect timing) and then after a year he moved up again to his current position of Director of the Visitor Center (luck), and you can tell he is very happy with his life, successful and anyone in his presence can tell.
In his words he described being a “Sam Ambassador as making million dollar sells every day” we see prospective and future students and sell all the opportunities Sam Houston offers, we help make top pivotal life changes for anyone.
His final words to me were “education fixes all” and to “never stop learning because it is our societal obligation” – Clint Lockwood. Very powerful words with so much meaning behind them and I’m happy I could share these tips with yall!
